A truly great art teacher, Lewis Greenberg, was very encouraging: he gave me a canvas, paints and brushes, and told me that I could paint anything I wanted. So I checked out a book about John Lennon from the school library and tried to paint his image in black and white, as if he was Jesus Christ (it was something that John Lennon wrote about: “Christ you know it ain’t easy\/you know how hard it can be\/the way things are going\/they’re gonna crucify me”). And with Lennon’s uncompromising moral and political views, a black-and-white Jesus Christ-like portrait made perfect sense. After I finished this painting, Mr. Greenberg had a private meeting with my parents, where he suggested that they enroll me into an art school, because he thought that I held some promise as a budding artist. Fortunately, my parents ignored his advice, reasoning that artists are always poor, and they never get to keep their favorite paintings (which must be sold to the clients to make the ends meet). My parents gave me the following advice: “first, get a diploma so that you can earn a decent living, and then you can do whatever you want, including art.” That approach made perfect sense to me, so I became a lawyer with a great hobby: painting. Later in life, when I earned measly tips from indifferent public while working as a pantomime on a street corner in St. Louis, I tried to re-create his magic. In this painting, I am looking at the broken mirror without any expression, with one eye missing. Since the eyes are windows to the soul, you can see that my soul is black, and no repairs can glue this mirror together anymore. Enlargement #1: In this enlargement of my face, you can see the razor-sharp shards of glass that pierce through my black eye socket. This symbolizes horrific pain. Anyone who lost their parent(s) will understand this. Since painting this canvas, I’ve met parents who have lost their children (to diseases, accidents, etc.) and their pain is even worse. Can you imagine being in their position? This painting shows what it’s like. He was 64 years old.  - I was absolutely gutted over my father’s death. In this painting, you see three rolls of film, and each frame is filled with business cards of very important people (diplomats, company presidents and CEO’s) who dedicated their entire lives to their respective careers. Many, not all, sacrifice their lives to feed their massive egos (after a certain point, how much do you really need to live well?) And yet, if they only took a few steps back and looked at themselves from a distance, they would understand how small they really are in the scheme of life. In the end, this painting asks a simple question: is it really worth dedicating your whole life to a business card that represents your ego? In my opinion, these people may be wealthy and respected by the society at large but, in exchange, they miss out on everything else that’s far more important in life, like spending time with their family and friends or travelling around the world for months at a time. I will always cherish the long ride in my yellow VW Beetle across America to Canada with him, just the two of us in a car together, driving for hours. We got lost in Manhattan and shopped for souvenirs, we listened to Dixieland jazz in Toronto, we saw the castle on top of the hill in old Quebeck, and made it back to St. Louis alive. It was a father-and-son adventure trip of a lifetime (the only one). My father always understood me. I could tell him anything, no matter what it was, because he never judged me; instead, he talked me through whatever problems came my way, and my decision would be final, even though it was really his decision. We were equal, but we were never equal. Everyone, all of the adults, respected him, from Kiev to Ostia Lido to St. Louis, throughout our twenty years’ of immigration, because of his wisdom and dignity. And I always wanted to be like him.
